As the leading public employer in Auvergne, the Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital (CHU) provides healthcare, teaching, research, and prevention missions across its three hospital sites: Gabriel-Montpied, Estaing and Louise-Michel. It is part of the regional hospital consortium 'TerritoireS d’Auvergne: Allier – Puy-de-Dôme', which brings together 14 public healthcare institutions.
Positioned at the highest level of the healthcare system, the Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital (CHU) is recognized for its expertise in providing specialized care in medicine, surgery, and obstetrics. The CHU offers a wide range of clinical services and is equipped with advanced medical and technical facilities. It also provides local healthcare services, notably through emergency care.
The CHU of Clermont-Ferrand continuously adapts its operations and organization to welcome you in optimal conditions of comfort and safety. As a result, in the event of hospitalization, some buildings may be under renovation or construction. The CHU of Clermont-Ferrand is also fully committed to sustainable development and the preservation of our environment.
An institution with a strong influence throughout the Auvergne region.
At the regional level, the CHU serves as a referral center for medicine, surgery, and obstetrics activities, including Level 3 maternity care, prenatal diagnosis, assisted reproductive technology (ART), gynecology, pain management, oncology, organ transplants and grafts, cardiac surgery, interventional radiology, neurosurgery, polytrauma care, neurovascular unit, obesity, and genetics.
The CHU’s regional mission is supported by its specialized technical platform in imaging and medical biology, its public service duties—particularly through its reference centers, centers of expertise and vigilance, its mobile geriatric team, therapeutic education programs, forensic medicine, its autism resource center, and the resource center for professionals working with perpetrators of sexual violence (CRIAVS).
92.3% of patients come from the departments of Puy-de-Dôme, Allier, Cantal, and Haute-Loire.
The CHU also plays a local role: 21.8% of patients are from Clermont-Ferrand, and nearly 60% of hospitalized patients come from the Greater Clermont area.
A central figure in regional collaboration
The CHU supports the continuation of activities in public hospitals across the former Auvergne region, notably through the shared assistants system and secondment agreements.
By supporting the medical-technical platforms of public healthcare facilities in the region, the CHU can focus on its core mission and accommodate patients requiring the most complex care, while facilitating the transition of peripheral hospitals. These hospitals must prioritize their activities according to their medical resources and capacities, with a focus on quality and safety, ensuring continuous and coordinated access to all levels of care for their populations.
This sharing of expertise to benefit local technical platforms enhances the CHU’s influence and helps ensure a structured and graduated healthcare offering throughout the Auvergne territory, fully aligned with the guidelines of the Regional Health Organization Plan (SROS-PRS). This support can take the form of outreach consultations, shared practitioner or assistant positions, the establishment of common protocols, inter-hospital medical federations, joint service groups (GCS), and regional projects.
The creation of Territorial Hospital Groups (GHT) has reorganized these historic missions, both for the GHT of which the CHU is a member and for the two other GHTs in the former Auvergne region (covering Cantal and Haute-Loire), with which the CHU is associated.
Beyond its regional territory, it is also worth noting that the CHU develops partnerships with hospitals in neighboring regions, such as the hospitals in Nevers and Ussel.
